Artist: The Belgrave House Band
Support: Nel Begley
Venue: Belgrave Music Hall
Date: 31.5.19
I originally had tickets to see Amy Winehouse on her ‘Back to Black’ tour (2006), which was cancelled for reasons that tragically transpired.
The Belgrave House Band beautifully brought Amy’s music back to life, with a faithful interpretation of her debut album; ‘Frank’. As near to the real thing as you’re ever likely to experience live.

Artist: Foals
Venue: O2 Academy, Leeds
Date: 23.5.19
For the previous decade, Foals had eluded me as a live act. Chances to see them play live seemed few and far between. However, the release of ‘Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost Part 1’ brought them to O2 Academy, Leeds for an exclusive album launch show.
An incredible gig with the band playing the newly released album in full, along with a few old favourites and a preview of things to come. Bring on Part 2 . . .
Setlist: Moonlight / Exits / White Onions / In Degrees / Syrups / On the Luna / Cafe D’Athens / Surf, Pt.1 / Sunday / I’m Done with the World (& It’s Done with Me) // Mountain at My Gates / My Number / Black Bull / Inhaler

Artist: Stats
Support: White Flowers / Fwar
Venue: Hyde Park Book Club, Leeds
Date: 7.5.19
My first visit to Hyde Park Book Club; another great independent live music venue. It’s not the most glamorous setting, but it has an authentic creative vibe with enthusiastic, friendly folk.
This is what the gig scene is all about; discovering new bands in old cellars. Apparently, this was Stats’ first gig outside London. Welcome to the north.

Venue: The Constitutional, Farsley
Date: 21.4.19
Jazzy Sunday lunch. Free entry; pay as you feel donations in a bread bin. That’s how they swing in the suburbs.

Artist: Uncle Buzzard
Venue: The Social, Leeds
Date: 13.4 19
Part of the Record Store Day 2019 celebrations, organised by Jumbo Records. After the disappointment of not getting any of the releases on my RSD wish list, I decided to make do with beer and a band.

Artist: Amyl and The Sniffers
Support: Pifco
Venue: Brudenell Social Club, Leeds
Date: 3.4.19
There’s great satisfaction to be had from seeing a band play live before they’re endorsed by the likes of Jools Holland and BBC Radio 6 Music.
Those in the know were at this gig, to see some authentic antipodean punk and Melbourne’s finest mullets. Punk’s not dead but its hairdresser might well be.

Artist: Cherry Glazzer
Support: Mantis State
Venue: Headrow House, Leeds
Date: 30.3.19
This was an odd one:
I previous saw Cherry Glazerr play a sold out gig at Brudenell Social Club (May 2017) with front-woman, Clementine Creevy, whipping the packed-out main room into a frenzy. However, the band’s return to Leeds saw them playing to a barely half-full room at the smaller Event Space of Headrow House.
To make matters worse, the sound quality was appalling, with the vocals being barely audible for much of the set, despite the audience’s protests to the sound desk.
A bafflingly lacklustre affair, through no fault of the band.

Artist: The Orb
Venue: Brudenell Social Club, Leeds
Date: 8.3.19
Celebrating their 30th anniversary, The Orb returned to Brudenell Social Club with an epic greatest hits set. Timeless tunes that have been replayed and reworked for three decades – and yet, sound as cutting edge today as they ever did. Ambience with attitude.

Artist: Snapped Ankles
Support: Charlotte Cannon
Venue: Brudenell Social Club, Leeds
Date: 7.3.19
I had no idea what to expect from this gig, so was amused and amazed in equal measure.
Charlotte Cannon performed half of her set lying on the stage floor in a somewhat affected but strangely appealing style.
Snapped Ankles firmly rooted themselves in my forest of favourites with their progressive post-punk groove and organic electronic sight & sound.

Artist: Neneh Cherry
Support: Greentea Peng
Venue: Leeds University Stylus
Date: 12.2.19
At my second ever gig, way back in 1988, Neneh Cherry was the support act for Bomb the Base. Even back then, she stole the show.
Over 30 years later she’s still the queen of cool. Mild mannered but exuding attitude and experience. New material is perfectly blended with timeless classics in a slick soulful set.

Artist: Tears for Fears
Support: Alison Moyet
Venue: First Direct Arena, Leeds
Date: 9.2.19*
An awesome support slot from Alison Moyet; setting the 80s vibe with a set of Yazoo and solo tracks.
Tears for Fears followed suit and upped the ante with a powerful set of past hits.
This was by no means a retro gig, with the music of both acts standing the test of time and sounding as cutting-edge as it ever did.
*Originally scheduled: 27.4.18

Artist: Ocean Colour Scene
Support: Martha Reeves & The Vandellas
Venue: O2 Academy, Leeds
Date: 5.12.18
It’s somewhat ignorant and rude when the majority of the audience talk throughout the support band; incredulous when the support act is Martha Reeves & The Vandellas. Living Motown legends are few and far between. Shut the f*ck up and watch the band!
Thankfully, Ocean Colour Scene ramped-up the volume to deliver a hefty set of their best known tracks.

Never ones for half measures, Twisted Wheel rattled The Wardrobe, as frontman Jonny Brown swigged from a bottle of Jack Daniel’s and consequently forgot the lyrics to some of their best known songs. Resoundingly raucous.

Venue: Her Fest; Brudenell Social Club, Leeds

I only saw a couple of the bands at this event, but Dead Naked Hippies stole the show with a their edgy post-punk style and charismatic front-woman (Lucy Jowett).

The gig also promoted the release of the ‘Young Male Rage’ single, by one of the most absorbing bands currently emerging from the Leeds music scene.

An impressive blend of styles and sets with both bands clearly destined for success. Such gigs prove why it’s always worth arriving in time to see the support band; catching up-and-coming acts who will soon return as headliners.

Two brilliant bands topping the bill for this gig, but The Murder Capital ‘killed it’. Definitely the ones to watch . . .

Artist: The Smyths
Support: John Hunt
Venue: Brudenell Social Club, Leeds
Date: 29.9.18
Fake is a four letter word: I don’t do tribute bands, unless they have an incredibly good reputation and there’s absolutely no hope of ever seeing the real thing. In this case I’d heard glowing reviews from friends who, like myself, grew up loving The Smiths and their melancholic melodies.

A great night of authentic sounding indie nostalgia as The Smyths worked their way though their namesakes’ back catalogue. The crowd embraced the band, reaching out with messiah like adulation to touch the hand of mock-Morrissey. Although the bass player with front-man syndrome should settle into the back-seat role of Andy Rourke or form his own Peter Hook tribute band.

Artist: The Bluetones
Support: Jordan Allen
Venue: Brudenell Social Club, Leeds

Sometimes it’s reassuring for a band to announce that they won’t be playing any new material, as they haven’t written any. The resulting set was a selection of flawless former singles and album tracks.
![305b_The Bluetones [270918]](https://mygigography.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/305b_the-bluetones-270918.jpg)
At one point, Mark Morris jokingly stated “This is the part of the show where we shut-up, so you can all have a chat and a catch-up.” – sarcastically but superbly highlighting the fact that everyone rudely talks throughout gigs these days. Followed by commenting “No, seriously, don’t mind us!” (Well said).

The second of two exclusive performances to celebrate the launch of Suede’s latest album; The Blue Hour. The early show featured a selection of new songs, whereas this late show saw the band ‘shaking their bits to the hits’ as they performed their third album, Coming Up, in its entirety.
The set appropriately ended with Bret Anderson walking amongst the crowd for a rendition of Saturday Night.

Another landmark gig (no. 300) – and what a gig it was; instantly claiming a place in my all time top 10.
The entire audience seemed to be in love with the awesome power and presence of Annie Clark (AKA St. Vincent). The very definition of ‘Masseduction’.

No lights, no backdrop, no banter; just a powerfully progressive groove, faintly illuminated by a glowing spliff. Niche Chilean krautrock at it’s finest.

Artist: New Purple Celebration
Venue: Leeds Town Hall
Date: 16.8.18
I usually avoid tribute bands, in fear of them tainting legends or simply cashing-in on the effort of others.
However, having foolishly missed the opportunity to see the true ‘purple one’ before his premature departure, the chance to see Prince’s music performed live was hard to refuse (especially as the tickets were free).
Although they’ll never come close to the real thing, New Purple Celebration are an incredibly talented collective of musicians who clearly love the music of Prince in his many guises. This was a welcome chance to hear respectful recitals from his back catalogue.
Shame about the audience, who were generally a crowd of fidgety morons with minimum attention span (probably due to a high number of complimentary tickets being issued). I expect the fans were rather more engaged at real Prince gigs.

One of the great things about Brudenell Social Club is that during the summer, when the students have gone back home, there are plenty of free gigs. An ideal way to ‘take a punt’, support the independent music scene and discover bands.

Having waited a gig-goer’s lifetime to see Gary Numan, I got to do so three times within 12 months – thanks to his ‘Savage’ resurgence. Always a spectacular set from the ever-evolving showman – but this intimate warm-up show for the forthcoming Bluedot Festival was by far the best.
