Artist: Ocean Colour Scene
Support: Martha Reeves & The Vandellas
Venue: O2 Academy, Leeds
Date: 5.12.18
It’s somewhat ignorant and rude when the majority of the audience talk throughout the support band; incredulous when the support act is Martha Reeves & The Vandellas. Living Motown legends are few and far between. Shut the f*ck up and watch the band!
Thankfully, Ocean Colour Scene ramped-up the volume to deliver a hefty set of their best known tracks.

The legendary people’s poet and fellow wordsmiths performing spoken word for the masses. Mirthful to see many youngsters at such a performance, with their parents cringing at the barrage of F-bombs launched from the stage (as if the kids don’t already know those words).

Artist: Twisted Wheel
Support: Sounds Like a Storm / Evil Regent
Venue: The Wardrobe, Leeds
Date: 26.10.18
Never ones for half measures, Twisted Wheel rattled The Wardrobe, as frontman Jonny Brown swigged from a bottle of Jack Daniel’s and consequently forgot the lyrics to some of their best known songs. Resoundingly raucous.

Artists: The Tuts / Dead Naked Hippies
Venue: Her Fest; Brudenell Social Club, Leeds
Date: 20.10.19
I only saw a couple of the bands at this event, but Dead Naked Hippies stole the show with a their edgy post-punk style and charismatic front-woman (Lucy Jowett).

Two brilliant bands topping the bill for this gig, but The Murder Capital ‘killed it’. Definitely the ones to watch . . .

306. The Smyths: Brudenell Social Club, Leeds [29.9.18]
Artist: The Smyths
Support: John Hunt
Venue: Brudenell Social Club, Leeds
Date: 29.9.18
Fake is a four letter word: I don’t do tribute bands, unless they have an incredibly good reputation and there’s absolutely no hope of ever seeing the real thing. In this case I’d heard glowing reviews from friends who, like myself, grew up loving The Smiths and their melancholic melodies.
![306b_The Smyths [290918]](https://mygigography.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/306b_the-smyths-290918.jpg?w=550&h=756)

A great night of authentic sounding indie nostalgia as The Smyths worked their way though their namesakes’ back catalogue. The crowd embraced the band, reaching out with messiah like adulation to touch the hand of mock-Morrissey. Although the bass player with front-man syndrome should settle into the back-seat role of Andy Rourke or form his own Peter Hook tribute band.

305. The Bluetones: Brudenell Social Club, Leeds [27.9.18]
Artist: The Bluetones
Support: Jordan Allen
Venue: Brudenell Social Club, Leeds
Date: 27.9.18
Sometimes it’s reassuring for a band to announce that they won’t be playing any new material, as they haven’t written any. The resulting set was a selection of flawless former singles and album tracks.
![305b_The Bluetones [270918]](https://mygigography.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/305b_the-bluetones-270918.jpg)
At one point, Mark Morris jokingly stated “This is the part of the show where we shut-up, so you can all have a chat and a catch-up.” – sarcastically but superbly highlighting the fact that everyone rudely talks throughout gigs these days. Followed by commenting “No, seriously, don’t mind us!” (Well said).

Artist: Suede
Venue: Brudenell Social Club, Leeds
Date: 22.9.18
The second of two exclusive performances to celebrate the launch of Suede’s latest album; The Blue Hour. The early show featured a selection of new songs, whereas this late show saw the band ‘shaking their bits to the hits’ as they performed their third album, Coming Up, in its entirety.
The set appropriately ended with Bret Anderson walking amongst the crowd for a rendition of Saturday Night.

Another landmark gig (no. 300) – and what a gig it was; instantly claiming a place in my all time top 10.
The entire audience seemed to be in love with the awesome power and presence of Annie Clark (AKA St. Vincent). The very definition of ‘Masseduction’.

297. New Purple Celebration: Leeds Town Hall [16.8.18]
Artist: New Purple Celebration
Venue: Leeds Town Hall
Date: 16.8.18
I usually avoid tribute bands, in fear of them tainting legends or simply cashing-in on the effort of others.
However, having foolishly missed the opportunity to see the true ‘purple one’ before his premature departure, the chance to see Prince’s music performed live was hard to refuse (especially as the tickets were free).
Although they’ll never come close to the real thing, New Purple Celebration are an incredibly talented collective of musicians who clearly love the music of Prince in his many guises. This was a welcome chance to hear respectful recitals from his back catalogue.
Shame about the audience, who were generally a crowd of fidgety morons with minimum attention span (probably due to a high number of complimentary tickets being issued). I expect the fans were rather more engaged at real Prince gigs.

One of the great things about Brudenell Social Club is that during the summer, when the students have gone back home, there are plenty of free gigs. An ideal way to ‘take a punt’, support the independent music scene and discover bands.

Having waited a gig-goer’s lifetime to see Gary Numan, I got to do so three times within 12 months – thanks to his ‘Savage’ resurgence. Always a spectacular set from the ever-evolving showman – but this intimate warm-up show for the forthcoming Bluedot Festival was by far the best.

Blowing their own trumpet (amongst other instruments) to celebrate the launch of ‘Obelisk’, their own Northern Monk ale, these guys literally organised a piss-up in a brewery.

I grew up in East Leeds during the 1970s and ’80s. It therefore seemed appropriate to return to Temple Newsam (a regular haunt during past school summer holidays) to see the musicians who influenced my music tastes.
Having previously seen Adam Ant perform Dirk Wears White Sox and Blueblack Hussar gigs, it was good to see him do a hits set in the headline slot.
Another highlight was seeing over-protective parents ushering their offspring from the event as The Boomtown Rats took to the stage with Bob Geldolf dropping a barrage of f-bombs. The social media backlash was laughable – what the f*ck did people honestly expect.

‘Tommy’ 30th Anniversary Tour: The line-up of The Wedding Present may have gone through many changes over the past three decades but their music has stood the test of time.
An intimate ‘home-town’ gig and set of Wedding Present favourites, interspersed with David Gedge’s familiar witty banter. Big sound, small venue, ringing ears!

Artist: The Breeders
Support: Pip Blom
Venue: Leeds University Stylus
Date: 29.5.18
I’d waited many years to see The Breeders play live, with chances to do so being few and far between. Sounding flawlessly and exuding cool, the atmosphere of this gig took me back to my student days and reminded why the band have been a firm favourite ever since.

Artist: Aziz Ibrahim & Dal Singh Rattan (Aziz & Dal)
Support: Bloxed Beats / Toria Garbutt, Louise Fazackerley & Kirsty Taylor (Nymphs & Thugs) / Testament
Venue: Trouble at Mill, Sunny Bank Mills, Farsley
Date: 27.5.18
As always, an impressive array of talent formed the line-up for the last ever ‘Trouble at Mill’ before the venue was to be demolished – therefore ‘Rubble at Mill’ on this occasion.
Music, spoken word poetry and beatboxing, accompanied by fine food and drink. Such nights will be missed but the spirit lives on in a new home; The Constitutional, Farsley.

287. From The Jam: Brudenell Social Club, Leeds [17.5.18]
Artist: From The Jam

![287b_from the jam [170518]](https://mygigography.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/287b_from-the-jam-170518.jpg)
A potentially great gig, spoiled by an appalling crowd who talked loudly throughout Steve & Sally Cradock’s acoustic support set and then continued to drunkenly chat and chant lyrics over Foxton & Hasting’s acoustic reworkings of The Jam classics.
This is the only occasion on which I’ve walked out of a gig at the usually exemplary Brudenell Social Club.
Gig culture is changing for the worse. People need to shut the f*ck up and watch the band, or piss-off to the pub for a chat, so those of us who want to hear the gig can do so.

Artist: Wolfgang Flür
Support: Peter Duugal / Virginia Wing & XAM Duo
Venue: Brudenell Social Club, Leeds
Date: 12.5.18

Chances to see Kraftwerk live are few and far between and tickets are ever illusive – so the opportunity to see one of their key former members (1973 – 1989) was not to be missed.
At 71 years of age, Wolfgang Flür was no doubt the oldest and savviest guy in the room as he performed reworked versions of classic Kraftwerk tunes along with new material.

285. Mexrrissey – La Reina is Dead: Church, Leeds [28.4.18]
Artist: Mexrrissey
Venue: Church, Leeds
Date: 28.4.18
The Queen is Dead and you have a Girlfriend in a Conga. All the more reason to celebrate as Mexrrissey exchanged misery for mariachi and brought their infectiously upbeat versions of The Smiths and Morrissey classics to Leeds International Festival.

Why reinvent the wheel? Why not!
Reformed and reborn with Jonny Brown fronting a new line-up; Twisted Wheel made a welcome return to the music scene with an intimate but incendiary gig at Lending Room.

The 20th Anniversary of Roni Size / Reprazent’s ‘New Forms’. A pioneering album that brought drum & bass to the mainstream. Performed live at this gig by a solo Roni Size, the timeless tracks sounded as fresh and edgy as ever. New Forms, old classics, timeless.

‘Low in High School’ and low in many people’s opinion following a spate of dubious personal opinions made public. ‘Bigmouth Strikes Again’, but Mozzer still gets top marks from me for a cracking live performance.
