There are no ticket stubs for many gigs at The Duchess, as we simply turned up and paid a few quid on the door. Entry to gigs was fairly cheap, so we could afford to take chances, seeing bands who frequently went on to greater things.

Baggy ‘daze’, as the ‘Madchester’ scene gathered momentum and crossed the Pennines. Was it really raining inside the refectory? With hindsight, probably not. There seems to be absolutely no evidence that this gig ever happened – but I was there.

My first trip to the legendary (and much missed) Duchess of York. Also my first of many CUD gigs. The early ones were completely mental!

My first ever concert. In years to come my gigography would expand to include an eclectic collection of artists, in venues of all shapes and sizes – but a world tour by the ‘Queen of Pop’ seems an appropriate start.
