Meat is Murder, 35th Anniversary Tour. Once again, The Smyths ‘unite and take over’ Brudenell Social Club for their annual three night residency. This time performing my favourite album by The Smiths. A rare chance to hear this collection of songs performed with such panache and authenticity.
With typically misjudged mirth, the bequiffed buffoon strides on stage with a mock cough and splutter; thanking the crowd for being brave enough to venture out. Morrissey is making reference to COVID-19, which is swiftly spreading but at the time is dangerously underestimated. To paraphrase the man himself, ‘Oh, we could smile about it then but in time it would be terrible’. He then proceeds to power through the best live set I’ve ever seen him perform, rarely relying on The Smiths’ back catalogue. Often one to offend but never one to disappoint.

Fake is a four letter word: I don’t do tribute bands, unless they have an incredibly good reputation and there’s absolutely no hope of ever seeing the real thing. In this case I’d heard glowing reviews from friends who, like myself, grew up loving The Smiths and their melancholic melodies.
A great night of authentic sounding indie nostalgia as The Smyths worked their way though their namesakes’ back catalogue. The crowd embraced the band, reaching out with messiah like adulation to touch the hand of mock-Morrissey. Although the bass player with front-man syndrome should settle into the back-seat role of Andy Rourke or form his own Peter Hook tribute band.
The Queen is Dead and you have a Girlfriend in a Conga. All the more reason to celebrate as Mexrrissey exchanged misery for mariachi and brought their infectiously upbeat versions of The Smiths and Morrissey classics to Leeds International Festival.
‘Low in High School’ and low in many people’s opinion following a spate of dubious personal opinions made public. ‘Bigmouth Strikes Again’, but Mozzer still gets top marks from me for a cracking live performance.
